Origin Notes

Guji is a sub-city of Sidamo located in the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and People's Region (SNNPR) of Ethiopia.  It is located in the Oromio region which lies in the southern part of Sidamo and is named after a tribe of the Oroma people. The people of Guji have a long tradition of coffee cultivation. Bodhi Leaf Coffee Traders (Ethiopia Guji Gigesa)

Our Hambela Guji comes from the Hambela Washing Station in the Guji region of Ethiopia. Hambela operates a coffee plantation and partners with more than 1000 farmers to source coffee. They are committed to working with the local farmers to improve quality and productivity.

Hambela has been supplying coffee to the auction for over 20 years, but was only established as a coffee exporter in 2014. They own 3 washing stations: two in Guracho village and one in Hambela District.

The Guji region is named for one of the tribes of the Oromo and is one of the administrative zones of the Oromia region. The zone was created in 2002 when the uplands of Borena zone were split to create it. The Guji region enjoys ideal coffee growing conditions. Its volcanic soil is bursting with nutrients, creating deep red and brown top-layer of soil. The regions' high altitude, bi-modal rainfall pattern and dry weather allow for the cherries to develop slowly.

Brewing Recommendations

Brewing Recommendations: We have had fantastic results with all three brewing techniques (Full Emersion, Drip, and Press).  For full emersion, we recommend brewing with a Clever and letting the grounds steep for four minutes before pouring.  In addition to V60 or Kalita, which we find amazing in the cup, we are giddy over the Chemex brew system and even loved it in standard machine drip.  For those who like a mix between traditional coffee and espresso we recommend pressing this coffee with an Aeropress using the reverse press method.
